Prozac and Panic
Attacks: Helpful or Just Asking For Trouble?
Prozac and panic attacks seem to go hand in hand
these days as far as some doctors are concerned.
It seems that this drug that—known to many
as the ‘miracle drug’—is now
being given to just about anyone experiencing
any anxiety at all. Prozac is used for several
things; most commonly an antidepressant which
has proven successful for many, but on it’s
own it does little more than help the physical
symptoms associated with anxiety. This may seem
like a Godsend to anyone who has suffered through
the terrifying symptoms that happen as a result
of an anxiety attack, but it doesn’t cure
them—not by a long shot.
Prozac and panic attacks can prove a mistake
for some of those who are on it for anxiety. Never
mind that medication alone will not get to the
root of the problem and cure it, but it has also
been known to cause insomnia and restlessness
in patients—couple that with high anxiety
levels and you’ve got a recipe for disaster!
Prozac may well be a wonder drug for depression
and other disorders caused by a chemical imbalance,
but in terms of anxiety; the medical jury is still
out on whether it’s caused by some imbalance
in the brain or whether it is a learned behavior
which most research seems to point to.
Patients even more so than doctors would love
nothing more than to find a fast and simple cure
for panic attacks, but Prozac and similar meds
are not that by a long shot because they do absolutely
nothing to cure anxiety and panic attacks. If
your doctor has talked to you about Prozac and
panic attacks and has recommended it as a treatment
option, you’d be doing yourself a favor
to look into other options that are geared towards
a cure as opposed to some temporary relief of
your physical symptoms. Learning how anxiety works
and understanding the fear that is triggering
your panic attacks is the first step in curing
you of them for good. A program that teaches you
to rationalize what is really going on during
an attack as opposed to what you fear is going
on will be far more beneficial to you than any
magic pill. A little bit of time invested in the
right treatment will mean a stop to your panic
attacks once and for all. Isn’t that much
better than just a quick and temporary fix?
