My
name is Sallie Grigson and like so many people and young adults,
I spent years desperately trying to get rid of my panic attacks.
I
never used to have issue with myself at all. However, in January
1994, after having a normal life for so many years I began life
at a new college. Even though this was fantastic and I was having
a great time, the problem was my whole lifestyle was altered.
My diet changed, I was sleeping less and because of the work
load it actually became quite stressful.
The Inevitable
Started To Happen.
My stress and anxiety started to worsen
and probably due to lack of exercise
and the poor quality of the food I was eating I started to get
skin problems too.
After
a few months the work eased off slightly and I actually did
have the chance to start swimming and made a big effort to get
myself healthy again - which I hoped would improve my anxiety.
However, after hoping for the best for a number of weeks, it
became obvious that it wasn't going to work. My anxiety levels
just got higher and higher. Then one day I had to give a presentation.
I started to feel dizzy about an hour before the presentation
and my stomache was aching and tight. then I started to feel
like I couldn't breathe properly and felt breathless. My heart
started to race and my head was thumping. I thought i was going
to feint. I even thought I was having a heart attack. At my
age!!
I
started to feel disconnected from other people in the room and
i was sweating. I decided that I couldn't go on with the presentation.
It was a nightmare.
And that was the point when I realized I had to do something
about it. It was my first full panic attack and it had stopped
me from doing my presentation. Worse was to come as I started
to fear that I would have another panic attack. And this just
created more anxiety and fear for me. I felt kind of trapped
in a cycle of fear and anxiety. Soon i didn't even want to socialise
or go out.
I
Tried Medication Pills But They Failed To Work.
At
the time, taking sedatives and anti-depressants was
the 'in thing' to do and after speaking to a friend
who had had moderate success with them, I decided to
give it a go. I visited a doctor and explained what
was going on. he prescribed some pills.
At
first it worked out reasonably well and I felt a bit
calmer and did start to improve slightly - and although
that wasn't exactly something to get too excited about,
at least it was a start. And any 'start' was good!
However,
after a few weeks, things began to go downhill. One
of the major issues was that I was taking more pills
and I found that I needed much more than the recommended
dosage for it to have any real effect.
I was
starting to feel that I would become addicted to medication
but was afraid to stop. Then I had another panic attack
and knew that sedating myself wasn't the answer.
Eventually
I had to stop.
Then I Tried
A Psychologist.......that
didn't help either
After
a few sessions I thought I was starting to make some
progress. But the sessions were so expensive and I
was still feeling really anxious and I was always
worried that I would have another panic attack. It
was stopping me from going after the job that I really
wanted as my confidence was now at an all time low.
The expense of the sessions just became another pressure
on me.
The
most worrying thing was that after the fourth session
Ihad another panic attack before I had to go to a
friend's wedding. I started to stress about socialising
and meeting new people. What if I have a panic attack
when I am there I thought. So I tried the breathing
techniques that the psychologist had taught me and
tried to remember the techniques but I was already
starting to panic. Before I knew it i was going back
to bed. I had decided not to go.
I let my friend
down. I didn't even have the nerve to call.
I then realised that I had got nowhere with the route
of using a psychologist. I wasn't breaking my cycle
of panic and anxiety. I knew this just wasn't going
to work, unless I wanted to go broke of course!
Eventually, I
found something that worked.
Having
spent so much time, money and energy desperately trying to succeed
with techniques and pills that ultimately had very little effect
was a big regret. However, the next thing I tried that was called
